Inside h.e.a.r: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill at Modus AV

Last Thursday, Modus AV opened its doors for another installment of h.e.a.r, and this one centered on an album that needs no introduction: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. From the moment the lights dimmed and the first notes of "Lost Ones" filled the room, it was clear this wasn't going to be a passive listen.

Asking the room to sit with that question while surrounded by the album's intros and reprises turned a listening session into something closer to a shared therapy room.

Responses ranged from grandmothers who modeled quiet, steady devotion, to first heartbreaks that taught people what they didn't want. A few attendees pointed to the album itself, saying Lauryn was the first to show them love could be complicated, conditional, healing, and disappointing all at once, sometimes within the same song.

One attendee put it simply: "I didn't know an album could ask me a question and wait for the answer."
